The African Jubilee Film Festival opens on June 27 at the DuSable Museum of African American History , 740 East 56th Place, and the films are open to all members of the public and are free of charge.
The first film which will be presented from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., is a special screening of Ousmane Sembene’s 1977 Senegalese film, Ceddo (Outsiders) that was originally banned in Senegal. It tells the story of the kidnapping of an African princess and the ensuing struggle between Muslim clerics and guardian of tradition, with missionaries and slave traders. Alie Kabba, the Executive Director of United African Organization, will lead the post-film conversation and discuss 50 years of African Independence.
This is the first film in The African Jubilee Film Festival, curated by Lynette Jackson and Floyd Webb, which runs from June 27 to December 5.
