Green Roof Open House in the Heart of the Loop

Feeling like you are far from green living because you live in Chicago?

In Chicago, you can often expect the unexpected, and find it right where you least expect it. At the corner of State and Madison, for example, the origin point of Chicago’s grid system street address system, sits the Metropolis Condominium (8 West Madison), formerly known at the North American Building. Built in 1913, this 21 story skyscraper, designed by renowned architects Holabird & Roche, was renovated as living space in 2005-06.

In this unlikely location, the Metropolis Condominium Association is celebrating Earth Day by holding a Green Roof Open House, on Monday, April 20th, from 5 to 7 p.m. or on Saturday April 26th from 1-4 p.m,

Members of the association will be on hand to answer questions and discuss how they installed the green roof, obtained funding resources for the installation of the green roof and the benefits of vegetation to absorb and reduce the volume and improve the quality of the storm water discharges after rainfall events.

If you live in a condo, why don’t you invite your condo board members? Even if you live in a dorm or apartment, admission is free and light refreshments will be served, and you can see how an urban location can be greened. With tax rebates and subsidies being introduced by Illinois and the Federal government, going green is beginning to pay off in more than just a reduction in a carbon footprint.

The project showcases green living in the heart of the Loop and represents a successful collaboration between government and the residents to reduce our City’s impact on the environment.
