When you use an image, please include a caption (the old term for it is cutline) that identifies who is in the picture, what it is about, and where the picture came from. A caption, also known as a cutline, is text that appears below an image…Captions can consist of a few words of description, or several sentences… Along with the title, the lead, and section headings, captions are the most commonly read words in an article, so they should be succinct and informative (from Wiki style guide.)
Yahoo Style Guide says, “Some people won’t be able to see the images on your site—for example, people who use a text-only browser (such as those on some mobile devices), or people who are blind and use a screen reader. It’s therefore important to add alt-text descriptions to images and, when possible, to provide image captions.”
Write alt text for an image even if the image has a caption—for search engines, it’s desirable to have the extra text associated with the image. But avoid using the exact same wording for both alt text and caption.
Example:
Alt text

Caption
Giuliana Orsini-Jones, in her final game, kicks the ball straight through the goalie’s legs to score the winning point and claim the Gold Cup for the Brisbane–West Nile youth soccer team.
