Foreign Correspondence: Remember, Remember the 5th of November

Reporter Katherine Iorio, a recent Columbia College Chicago graduate, reported from London on  Bonfire Day, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, protests. The protests were part of a day of world-wide protests called Million Mask March and OpVendetta on Nov. 5th, which is known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Day, or Fireworks Night, in the U.K.

Iorio writes, “Before marching down to Parliament Square, demonstrators with their Guy Fawkes masks met at Trafalgar Square for what was described as a “meet-and-greet” on their Facebook Events page.

From demonstrators demanding change in the U.K. government through microphones to activists smoking cannabis and singing reggae music, the time spent before the big march was truly a scene out of “Dazed and Confused.” Here is her report from the scene.

Iorio reported that  Russell Brand, wearing a mask, was a center of attention as he mingled with the crowd.

“Whatever party they claim to represent in the day, at night they show their true colours and all go to the same party,” said Brand on Twitter, using the #MillionMaskMarch hashtag.” Eleven protesters were arrested. Read Katherine Iorio’s full report.
