St. Bernard Hospital has announced it is hosting a free health fair for pre-school and school-aged youth.  They are offering free health screenings and sports physicals as a part of Chicago Public Schools’ required back-to-school health program. The 6th District Back-to-School Health Fair is being held in conjunction with Illinois State Rep. Esther Golar’s office at St. Bernard Hospital, 326 W. 64th St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to bring their pre-school and school-aged youth, along with copies of their immunization (shot) records, to the hospital’s outpatient center where they will be seen by physicians, nurses, dentists, and dental assistants. Students will receive back-to-school physicals, sports physicals, immunizations, lead tests, and dental screenings in the hospital’s Dental Center.

In addition, St. Bernard Hospital is providing free school supplies and backpacks for students while supplies last. Parents and guardians will have the opportunity to meet many of St. Bernard’s doctors, nurses, and dentists while also receiving information from representatives of community organizations and local businesses that will be present at the fair.

Golar has been involved in health projects for the 6th District for many years and sits on the Illinois General Assembly’s Elementary and Secondary Education Committee, as well as the Health Care Availability Access Committee. “St. Bernard Hospital has served Englewood and surrounding communities for over 100 years and along with representative Golar we seek to address the health disparities that exist for many South Side children,” said Derek Michaels, marketing manager at St. Bernard Hospital. “This is an important community event designed to keep our children healthy so that they can have a productive school year. Despite the somewhat late start of the school year, we want to assure that all students receive their health physicals,” he added.

The health fair is free and open to the public. Free parking is available on the St. Bernard parking lot across from the hospital. For additional information, please call (773) 962-4264.
